Rhodococcus equi is een gram-positieve, facultatief intracellulaire pathogeen die pneumonie veroorzaakt bij veulens tussen 1 en 5 maanden leeftijd. Naast abcessen in de longen kunnen soms ook abcessen gezien worden ter hoogte van mesenterium en darmen.
